Exploring rocks and soils in our environment
We are very fortunate to live in a community surrounded by sedimentary rock, because we just have to go outside of our school to find incredible fossils! We tried an experiment with coffee grounds, salt, flour and coffee to replicate some of our own 'found fossils'.

We also explored different soil samples and discovered which soils absorb water best.

100 Days Smarter!!
100 Day in school is a special milestone. It celebrates being 100 days smarter, completing half a year of work and let's us celebrate all day! We enjoyed many activities, from ways to make $1.00, a 100 mega-snack to estimating 100 cm and what we will be like at 100 years old.

Making Christmas Merry
One of my favourite times of the year is making gifts for our families.
This year, we explored textured and line in art when creating our masterpieces. First, using 3 shades of green, we created different textures on paper using only our paintbrushes. We dragged them, dabbed them, swirled them...whatever our hearts desired! Then, we explored various kinds of lines when creating 'tree tracers'. Straight lines, curved lines, jagged lines...the possibilites were endless.
When the paper was dry and the tracers were ready, we cut out our trees and placed them on the background. The finishing touch was a little bit of glitter. Check out the completed pieces under "The Art Room"!

Exploring Sound
Today's math warm-up was a doozy! There were a lot of 'this is impossible' comments at first, but with persistence the challenge was accomplished!
The clues for today:
· Has all even digits
· Is greater than 250
· Has 2 digits the same
· The tens is the largest digit
· The hundreds digit and ones digit add up to 10
What was interesting is that students were 'stumped' by the 2nd clue. Many got stuck believing that the number was 3 digits because it was 'greater than 250'. Once they realized 4-digit numbers are also greater than 250, the 'a-ha' lightbulbs went on!
Can you spot which one doesn't belong?

Mental Math Stretches
To get our brains ready for math tasks, we have started doing 'mental math stretches'. Today's activity was Build a Number That.... Students had to create a number using digit cards that met a set of criteria:
1. My number is greater than 500
2. It is an odd number
3. The number is less than 3000
4. The tens digit is the smallest digit
5. When you add the tens and units digits, you get the digit for the hundreds
What is great about this activity is that there is not 1 correct response. We asked each other to 'prove it', meaning prove that the number you built is correct. This encourages students to use 'math talk' and 'math language'. There was a lot of 'oh ya' being said!! Can you spot the one that doesn't belong?

Wowza! I don't know about you, but I feel like I have not stopped these last few weeks! We took off running and have not looked back!
The start of the year is always hectic, so I am happy to finally sit down and write a post. Busy is an understatement for the how things have been, but we are slowly getting back into the groove!
We started the year discussing rights and responsibilities of us, as Canadian citizens and as classroom citizens.

So our final seed/soil experiment is in full swing! 5 days ago we planted some radish seeds and experimented with various conditions. We altered if some seeds got sun or not and water or not. We tried to take away 'air' for some, but the result was not the best!
So our final seed/soil experiment is in full swing! 5 days ago we planted some radish seeds and experimented with various conditions. We altered if some seeds got sun or not and water or not. We tried to take away 'air' for some, but the result was not the best!
And today, boy were we surprised with what we saw!
Some of our observations:
- The seeds with no sun still sprouted!
- The seeds planted in loam all sprouted.
- The radish seeds in the sun were green and shorter.
- The radish seeds with no sun were tall, skinny and yellow.
- The radish seeds with no sun, in the bag were KA-RAZY tall, skinny and yellow!
- Even with no water, the radish seeds in loam germinated and sprouted - we realized that loam hold moisture when fresh out of the bag.
- The radish seeds in the sand don't look very happy, but the ones with water did sprout a bit.

Pumpkin Mania!
Halloween may be over, but the fun sure isn't! Today was an action-packed, busy-as-beavers, what-is-that-amazing-smell in the hallway kind of day. After saying a fond-farewell to the jack-o-lantern, we examined the differences between raw pumpkin, cooked pumpkin and pureed pumpkin. Yes, there was a lot of eeewwwws and grosses and 'I'm not touching that' at the beginning, but things quickly changed!
We split into 3 groups and got busy! We made pumpkin muffins, pumpkin cookies and pumpkin pie tarts! Although they were all delicious, the pumpkin pie tarts won out in a vote!

We have recently started exploring forces that act without direct contact - gravity, magnetism and static electricity. So far we have learned:
- magnets have 2 poles
- same poles repel, opposite pole attract
- repel is to push away
- attract is to pull towards
- the earth is like a giant magnetic creating a magnetic field
- gravity is a force that pulls us toward earth
- magnets can be natural or man-made
- magnets are attracted to materials with iron in them
- magnets are cool to explore with!

Finally, we started to glue, and glue and glue, layering the various tree sizes and colours.

It's pumpkin time!
After going for a fall walk, we were inspired to celebrate the fall season with some pumpkin art. First, we sketched out our pumpkins and then outlined them with chalk pastel. Next, we coloured in the pumpkins with oil pastel, making sure to leave the chalk lines. After some hesitation, the pumpkins were painted and then 'washed'. The paint stained the paper wherever the chalk lines were, and the oil pastels resisted the paint.

Happy Father's Day!
We decided to combine Father's Day with our Inuit inquiry by doing Inuit printmaking for a treasured gift. Students first chose an image to draw / trace on a piece of paper. It was then put on a styrofoam tray, and traced again so the image became engraved on the styrofoam. This essentially became the 'stamp'. The stamp was then painted and pressed onto a piece of paper. The results? A-mazing!!

Vincent Van Gogh & Batik
As part of our study of famous artists, we learned about one of the most famous artists of all time - Vincent Van Gogh. We looked carefully at his Sunflowers piece, discussed the contrasting background to vase, the shape and colour of the flowers and the distinct blue line.
We combined this famous piece with the artistic style of batik. Traditionally, it is a wax-resist dyeing of fabric, but we replicated it with pastels and paper!
First, we sketched our sunflowers and coloured everything in oil pastels. Then we crumpled our pieces into the smallest balls possible. This provided 'cracks' in the pastel. Next, we put a wash of brown paint over the piece to allow the cracks and any unmarked paper to be dyed brown. Finally, the artwork was carefully washed to remove any excess paint.

Exploring Plants & Soils
While researching our Canadian habitats, we discovered that there is quite a variety of plants and soils in our country. Because our Canadian climate has such a range from coast to coast, we have everything from a rainforest to the arctic tundra. Within our own community, we found 3 different types of soils - black earth, sand and clay. The students created an experiment to determine how well these different soils would support plant life.
After gathering samples of each type of soil, we planted radish seeds in each cup. We also experimented with different growing conditions.

- air, water and sun provided
- air, no water and sun provided
- no air, water and sun provided (although we said no air, we also discussed how this wasn't completely accurate, as there was air in the bag, just not 'fresh air')
- air, water and no sun provided
What did we discover?
- plants need energy from the sun
- plants have a green pigment in their leaves called chlorophyll to trap the sun's energy
- the process of a plant making its own food is called photosynthesis
- plants can germinate in sand and clay, but black earth appeared to be the best soil to grow plants
- the bag acted like a greenhouse, which kept the plants warm\
- plants need water to survive
- stems grow up to reach the sunlight
- roots grow down into the soils
- plants lean and grow towards the light source

Van Gogh - Sunflowers
June 2015
We continued our study of famous artists by learning about Vincent Van Gogh. Van Gogh was a very serious, silent and thoughtful child. Although he suffered from temporal lobe epilepsy, hallucinations and mental illness, he was still able to create 2000 pieces of art! Even more fascinating is that he was a self-taught artist. We examined his piece "Sunflowers".

Field Trip to Fort Whyte Alive
May 2015
We ventured to Fort Whyte Alive for a wonderful field trip. Although the sky was overcast, the temperature was ideal, the bugs non-existent and the rain held off until we were on our way home. Everyone loved the critter-dipping, the sod house, the escaped pig (yes you read that correctly!) and the endless fascination that geese were everywhere!

Everyone loved the critter-dipping, the sod house, the escaped pig (yes you read that correctly!) and the endless fascination that geese were everywhere!
Our trip was the perfect introduction to our study of plants and soils in our environment. We learned about sustainable farming, needs of plants, what soil is formed from and adaptations of plants. If you have never been to Fort Whyte, it's worth the visit!
April 2015
I apologize friends and families for our absence. We have been so busy since Spring Break that it is hard to believe we are nearing the end of April! Our focus in art for the remainder of the year is on famous artists and their work. The first artist we studied was Salvador Dali. What an interesting fellow he was!
Born May 11, 1904, in a small town in Spain, Dali became a leader of the Surrealist Movement. One of his most recognizable paintings is entitled The Persistence of Memory. It is believed that the 'melting clocks' in this painting were inspired by Dali eating soft cheese and imagining it melting in the sun. Hence, the idea of surrealism is taking the possible and creating the impossible.

Inspired by Salvador Dali, we studied his piece The Elephants.
We discussed the surreal image of the elephants, focusing particularly on the legs. This inspired our own pieces!
Using only pencils, we sketched and shaded our elephants, then added the background using crayon.

March Art
As the snow melts and everything around us has a 'blah' feeling, we wanted to start bringing some colour back into things. What better way to do that than with art! We used the upcoming St. Patrick's Day to create some beautiful pastel pieces.
First we discussed the colour wheel. Colours opposite each other are called complimentary and colours beside each other are called analogous. After using a heart to trace out a shamrock, students had to choose two analogous colours. They had their choice of medium - chalk pastels, oil pastels or pencil crayons. We also discussed blending colours.
The final result was amazing!

Mummification Process
February 2015
One of the most fascinating aspects of Ancient Egypt that we have learned about is the mummification process. Through research, we explored the embalming process, the wrapping and burial of the body.
To replicate this process, we decided to use 'apple mummies'. We cut an apple into 5 relatively equal pieces and placed each piece in a cup.

To replicate this process, we decided to use 'apple mummies'. We cut an apple into 5 relatively equal pieces and placed each piece in a cup.
Our next step was covering each apple piece with a different material, replicating the natron substance. We used regular table salt, epsom salt, baking soda and 2 combinations of the 3.
We checked the progress on our embalming after 2 days.
And again after 6 days.
Clockwise from the top: all 5 apple mummies, salt, epsom salt, baking soda, salt/baking soda combo, epsom salt/baking soda combo.
And finally after 16 days.
Our observations reveal that regular table salt preserves our apple mummies the best.

February is I Love To Read Month.
This year we have set a school-wide reading goal - to read 100 000 minutes by the end of February! This means each student has to read for 30 minutes a day for 15 days in February. (This includes the 15 minutes of DEAR time daily). If we meet our goal, the students will have a chance to vote on what Mr. B. will have to endure.
Will it be....
*wearing a dress, high heels and makeup to school one day?
*getting duct-taped to his chair?
*becoming a human sundae?

Ancient Egypt Pharaohs
January 2015
The new year is bringing us many new adventures in Grade 3. We have headed to Ancient Egypt and are quickly becoming fascinated by the history. Our latest project celebrated the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt.
Our first step was sketching the pharaoh's face and headdress. We learned how from Art Projects for Kids. http://artprojectsforkids.org/how-to-draw-king-tut/

Our first step was sketching the pharaoh's face and headdress. We learned how from Art Projects for Kids. http://artprojectsforkids.org/how-to-draw-king-tut/
Next we coloured the faces with oil pastels.
When the entire pharaoh was complete, we crumpled our art into the tiniest ball possible. Yes, you read that right, we crumpled it. This was a bit of a surprise!
The purpose of crumpling the artwork was to give the piece an 'aged' look and to create cracks in the oil pastel. We then washed over the entire piece with brown paint, ran it under water and rinsed off the excess. Wherever white paper was left, or where there was a crack in the pastels, the paper stained brown.
This artform is called Batik. Typically done on cloth, select areas are blocked out by brushing or drawing hot wax over them. The cloth is then dyed. The wax resists the dye, allowing the original colour to remain.
The final result...

Celebrating Winter
December 2014
It always amazes me how excited children get on the first snowfall. If it happens at school, they all run to the windows and begin shouting "It's snowing! It's snowing!". What better way to celebrate the snow than with art!
We began with a mini-lesson on tinting and shading.
Did you know...
* Tinting is mixing a colour with white to create a lighter 'value'?
* Shading is mixing a colour with black to create a darker 'value'?
* Value is the lightness and darkness of a colour?
The first step was to paint a piece of paper a beautiful dark blue for the background sky. For each layer that followed, we tinted the blue with white, to create a lighter blue. As seen in the picture, we had 5 layers in total. Each layer was tinted lighter that the previous one.

Once our layers were dry, the fun began! Each layered was ripped...yes ripped...to create a snowhill effect. The layers were then glued onto each other to create a distance effect. Trees and snowflakes were then added as details. They turned out beautiful, don't you agree?

We have headed for our first destination of Africa! Before leaving we researched the diverse landforms found there and created a topographic map. Here are some of the interesting facts we have learned so far...
- The Nile River - Logan O. & Travis * The Nile River flows through Africa and is the longest river in the world. * It is 6,670 kms long. * The Nile River flows south to north. It drains into the Mediterranean Sea. * The Nile River is made from the White Nile and the Blue Nile. * The Egyptians lived near the Nile River because it provided food, transportation, water and fertile land for farming.
- Mountains in Africa - Sarah & Trisha
* The highest mountain in Africa is Mount Kilimanjaro. This is also the tallest mountain in the world.
* It is 5895 meters tall.
* Mount Kilimanjaro is located on the east side of Africa in Tanzania.
- Oceans of Africa - Hayley & Addison
* The Indian Ocean is east of Africa and the Red Sea is north-east.
* The Nile River empties into the Mediterranean Sea which is north of Africa.
* Trading ships use the Suez Canal which is in Egypt.
- The Sahara Desert - Sophia & Kaitlynn
* It is spread over 90,000,000 square kms. This is almost the same size as the USA.
* The Sahara Desert is the third largest desert in the world.
* There are mountains in the Sahara Desert which get snow.
* Dinosaur fossils have been found in the Sahara Desert.
- African Savanna - Precious & Matthew
* There is a wet season and a dry season.
* African Savanna is a grassland with trees.
* The African Savanna has the largest land animal, the elephant, and the tallest animal, the giraffe.
- The Congo Rainforest - Luke & Priscilla
* The Congo is about 1.5 million square kilometers.
* There are 11,000 species of plants in the Congo.
* There are many cool and odd animals in the rainforest like the okapi, a forest giraffe.
* It is very rainy and warm in the Congo.
- Egypt - Cole & Logan M.
* The capital of Egypt is Cairo.
* Egypt would be all desert if it wasn't for the Nile River.
* There is Upper Egypt in the south and Lower Egypt in the north. This is because the Nile River flow south to north.
* Ancient Egyptians built pyramids as tombs for pharaohs and their queens.

Welcome Fall
October 2014
Fall is the most beautiful season we have, and what better way to celebrate than with art and poetry? We used watercolours to create a background for our fall trees. In traditional watercolour style, we taped our papers flat to create a dramatic border around our art pieces. Trees and leaves were then added. To finish our project, we wrote fall poems focusing on all the amazing colours of the season.

Seeds, Soils, Sprouts & More
As the year is quickly coming to an end, we have started to think about all of the places we have traveled this year. Our latest adventure took us through the depths of the Congo Rainforest, which lead us to make some very important discoveries.
Did you know that rainforests....
We all knew that plants help to clean the air, but all of these discoveries made us want to learn more about them. We set up a mini-greenhouse in the classroom to help us with this.
First, we put a moist paper towel in a bag with some beans that have been soaked overnight. We hung our bags in the greenhouse and waited. Some of us thought it would take up to a week for something to happen...

As the year is quickly coming to an end, we have started to think about all of the places we have traveled this year. Our latest adventure took us through the depths of the Congo Rainforest, which lead us to make some very important discoveries.
Did you know that rainforests....
- help stabilize the world’s climate ?
- provide a home to many plants and animals?
- maintain the water cycle?
- protect against flood, drought, and erosion?
- are a source for medicines and foods?
- support tribal people?
We all knew that plants help to clean the air, but all of these discoveries made us want to learn more about them. We set up a mini-greenhouse in the classroom to help us with this.
First, we put a moist paper towel in a bag with some beans that have been soaked overnight. We hung our bags in the greenhouse and waited. Some of us thought it would take up to a week for something to happen...
We knew that all plants begin with a seed, so we wanted to see up close what actually happens to the seed! When we took the seeds out after 2 days, we found an 'outer skin' that had separated from the seed.
Some of us were extremely surprised to find that our seeds had actually started to germinate!
Upon closer examination, some even found a sprout!
Of course this sparked some curiosity, so we began to dissect the bean seed. We took off that outer skin, and carefully separated the two halves of the seed. Guess what we found?
Is that not the coolest thing you've seen?
So of course, we couldn't just leave things here. We headed outside, found a spot in the garden and planted our seeds. Everyday we keep checking to see if there are any sprouts popping up!

Take a tour of our Congo Rainforest
For the last few weeks, we have been lost in the wonders of the Congo Rainforest. It is truly one of the most remarkable place on Earth.
We decided, as a class, to create a model of the Congo Rainforest. To begin, we created a rough plan of what we wanted to include in the model. Being named after the Congo River, we of course had to include a river. We also learned that there are numerous waterfalls throughout Africa. To create this feature, we combined Styrofoam and salt dough to create the hill, where the waterfall begins, and flows into the Congo Rainforest.
In order to accurately model the various layers of the rainforest, we decided to put a maximum height on each layer. This would ensure each layer was proportioned to the others. The class was so engaged in this project that we even have real moss, rocks and sand!
Please take a tour of our rainforest and let us know what you think! Can you see the huts, snakes and hammocks?

We Are Lions...Hear Us ROAR!!
On our African travels through Kruger National Park, we encounter one of the most beautiful animals ever...the African lion. Unfortunately, this animal is in danger of declining numbers.
We discussed the beauty of this animal, including its features and colours. The students then drew the lion's face and painted the mane. We were inspired by the artist Leroy Neiman.

African - Inspired Masks
Traveling through Africa has been an experience in itself. We have traveled through the Sahara Desert, boated down the Nile River and went on a jeep safari through Kruger National Park.
While in South Africa, we discovered the importance of ritual and ceremonial masks in traditional culture and art. We took this knowledge and created our own African-inspired masks.
We used molds and plaster wrap to create the base. We then painted and decorated the masks to create a self-expressive mask.

As the finale to our China study, we decided to build our own version of The Great Wall of China.
Using pieces of cut styrofoam, first we laid out an outline for the pathway. After gluing this down, we continued building up the walls with additional layers of sytrofoam and built in steps. Once the walls were high enough, we laid a piece of thin styrofoam on the edges to create the pathway. A few more layers of wall were added and the header at the stairs.
The next step was painting. We combined two colours to create an aged look of the bricks. The final step was adding some decorative grass detail along the sides. We are so proud of this structure and how great it turned out. What an adventure!

Chinese Lanterns
As part of our Chinese New Year celebration, we created watercolour Chinese lanterns. The artists used real liquid watercolours to create the lantern shape freehand. They then painted the backgrounds. To achieve the texture effect, the artists sprinkled salt on the watercolour while it was still wet. Once the salt was dry, we simply brushed it off to leave the beautiful effect, outlined the lanterns and added Chinese characters.

Together as a class, we have been reading the beloved novel Charlotte's Web by E.B.White. It is a classic novel of friendship, love, life and death between Wilbur the pig, Charlotte the spider and Fern, the girl who began it all.
We have been writing chapter summaries, analyzing characters, comparing settings and having great discussions about the fantastic vocabulary in the novel.
So far, our novel is, in one word....

Embracing Winter
Why fight the winter when we can find so much beauty in it?
November 2013
So now that Halloween is over for another year, we were wondering what happens to all of the haunted houses that nobody needs anymore? We thought that people would probably try to sell them, so we made our own FOR SALE ads for a haunted house.
We have been learning about the 6+1 writing traits in English Language Arts, and thought that this project was ideal to explore the traits of ideas, voice and word choice.
Check out our ads and see if there is a special place for you!

Lest We Forget
October 2013
What would October be without some ghosts, goblins and monsters. Rather than doing the 'traditional' pumpkin theme, we decided to celebrate Halloween with Pablo Picasso.
Our fist step was learning about the famous artist and how he was one of the 'inventors' of the style of cubism. Cubism displays many different views of a subject at one time. As seen in our pieces, students created a Halloween themed cubism monster showing half of the subject looking forward and the other half looking sideways.
They turned out 'spook'tacular!

One of the first projects we did this year was a "Whooooo's Whooooo?" riddle and art piece.
Students first generated ideas for clues about themselves. Initially the clues were quite broad and general. With each consecutive clue, the riddle became more specific to each student.
To create the owl, students followed a step-by-step drawing lesson and then outlined the piece with black glue. Once the glue was dry, the budding artists coloured the owls and backgrounds with chalk pastels.
The owls and riddles were put up for the Open House in September. Families and friends had to read the riddles and try to guess Whoooo was Whoooo! Do you see anyone you know in the pictures?
