Our adventures have taken us into the depths of The Congo Rainforest. My oh my, words cannot describe this place!
Here are just some of the highlights we have discovered:
- The Congo Rainforest is called so because the Congo River flows through it.
- The Congo River is the second largest river in the world.
- Only the Amazon Rainforest is larger than The Congo Rainforest.
- It is located in central Africa.
- The most famous Congo Rainforest people are the Pygmies. They are shorter than the average person at 4 feet 10 inches for men and 4 feet 1 inch for women.
What makes a rainforest?
- Rainforests are very dense, warm, wet forests.
- They are called a 'rain'forest because they get so much rainfall.
- Rainforests contain more than 1/2 of the world's plant and animal species!
- There are 4 layers in a rainforest.
* the forest floor
* the understory layer
* the canopy layer
* the emergent layer
Did you know.....
- that the trees of a tropical rainforest are so densely packed that rain falling on the canopy can take as long as 10 minutes to reach the ground?
- that there are 2 kinds of rainforests? There are temperate and tropical rainforests. The Congo Rainforest is a tropical rainforest.
- rainforests are found on every continent except Antarctica? Yes....even North America has a rainforest!
Keep checking our site for our own 'video' and model of the Congo Rainforest! Stay tuned for more exciting adventures!
